Located on a large amalgamated block in Greenham Street, Cottesloe, with views to the beach and the surrounding western suburbs, this house was designed as a modern family residence with a strong focus on flexible spatial planning and outdoor living, maximizing the use of the tennis court, swimming pool and expansive gardens that characterize this site. The site layout and orientation were somewhat predetermined by the existing site features, but clever architectural planning has resulted in a home achieves excellent solar orientation and outlook. The sense of connection between indoors and outdoors is further explored with the use of large sliding doors that open from the living spaces and bedrooms onto outdoor verandahs and decks, maximizing natural ventilation, lighting and views whilst also protecting the interior from the harsh west sun with large overhangs.
The building form and style combine to create a contemporary and casual beach house, incorporating a simple rectilinear form with a floating pitched roof and articulated facades broken up by a flat arch colonnade structure that anchors the design. The clean lines and building form will be expressed with a simple palette of contemporary materials including large areas of glass, textured acrylic render, polished plaster and zinc cladding, combined with a timber shingle roof. The design incorporates a number of features which respond to Environmentally Sustainable Design principles including a solar/PV system, energy-efficient lighting and appliances, high spec thermal glazing, low VOC materials and salt-tolerant/drought resistant plants to the landscaping.
