1444 Fern Residence

This interior renovation project in Perth, Western Australia focuses on improving functionality, spatial flow and contemporary living within an existing 2005-built home. The refurbishment transforms key internal areas through considered design, material refinement and strategic alterations, delivering a timeless and highly liveable family home.

The client engaged the project as a targeted renovation of priority spaces including the kitchen, dining and living areas, main suite, dressing room and gallery. The brief emphasised improved layout efficiency, updated aesthetics and minimal disruption during construction, with a strong focus on maintaining a disciplined budget while maximising design impact.

The renovation introduces a restrained material palette inspired by Scandinavian architecture, with natural oak timber used selectively to highlight joinery, recesses and key architectural elements. This approach creates warmth and texture while maintaining a clean and contemporary interior expression.

Lighting design plays a central role in the transformation, particularly within the living and dining areas. A curved glass-faced rendered wall is enhanced with a custom slimline anodised aluminium hanging rail that follows the geometry of the space, providing both functional display and a subtle architectural detail.

The kitchen is reimagined as the central hub of the home, anchored by a generous island bench designed for everyday use and entertaining. White Carrara marble surfaces introduce a refined contrast to surrounding materials, while stainless steel finishes reinforce durability and practicality. A new butler’s pantry extends the functionality of the kitchen, offering concealed storage and preparation space that can be closed off when hosting.

Upstairs, an underutilised store room is converted into a dedicated dressing room with direct connection to the main suite. Spatial planning improvements continue within the bedroom, where the removal of an existing robe allows for a more generous layout, improved circulation and the introduction of highlight windows that bring in natural light and support cross ventilation.

The ensuite renovation focuses on both function and material quality, incorporating dual vanities, a large shower and increased access to natural light. A custom limestone vanity bench forms the centrepiece of the space, integrating concealed storage and towel rails while balancing the warmth of timber cabinetry.

This Perth interior renovation demonstrates how strategic alterations can significantly improve the performance, comfort and aesthetic quality of an existing home, delivering a contemporary outcome without the need for a full rebuild.
