0110 Peppermint Grove Residence

Peppermint Grove Residence is a heritage home renovation, alteration and second storey addition in Peppermint Grove, Perth, transforming a Colonial-era bungalow into a contemporary family home while carefully preserving its original character.

Located in one of Perth’s most prestigious suburbs, the project responds to a brief to retain and enhance the existing single-storey dwelling while introducing additional space and functionality to suit modern living. The design balances heritage sensitivity with contemporary architectural interventions, ensuring the home remains connected to its original form and setting.

A new second storey addition accommodates the primary bedroom zones, allowing the ground floor to be reconfigured into open plan living spaces. Significant internal alterations improve spatial flow, functionality and connection between rooms, creating a more cohesive and liveable layout.

The existing external proportions, materials and architectural detailing are carefully maintained, with new elements designed to complement the original bungalow. Roof forms and gable detailing are extended and reinterpreted to integrate the second storey, while a refined verandah language introduces a subtle contemporary layer that remains sympathetic to the heritage context.

This updated architectural language extends to additional structures across the site, including a new gatehouse and pool pavilion, as well as carefully detailed wrought iron fencing. Together, these elements create a cohesive residential composition that enhances both the home and its surrounding landscape.

The interior renovation focuses on light, simplicity and material consistency. A soft palette of stone and off-white finishes creates a calm and contemporary atmosphere, while new French doors improve natural light and establish strong visual connections to the outdoors.

Landscape design plays a central role in the transformation, with formal gardens and a swimming pool introduced to redefine the front yard. These additions provide privacy, structure and amenity, turning an underutilised area into a functional and elegant outdoor setting that complements the architecture.

This Perth heritage renovation demonstrates how thoughtful alterations and additions can elevate an existing home, delivering modern comfort and spatial clarity while preserving the character and identity of a historic residence.
